I don’t know about you, but I love plaid! Probably just as much as I love polka dots! Maybe even more? But in the fall…my love for it grows exponentially. It has such a coziness to it, don’t you think? When fall hits, I immediately search high and low for all things plaid! Clothes, blankets, pillows. I need it all! So, when I started this chair project, I knew the fabric had to be plaid! I started out with these two chairs that I found in a neighbor’s trash. They had seats on them, thankfully, but I didn’t find them in our mess of a basement until after I took this picture. Typical!
The chairs were in fine shape, they were just tired and worn. The seats had been recovered once before in a very seventies green fabric. It definitely had to go! I knew when I found this plaid fabric, it was just right for them. I also knew that I wanted to give the chairs a bit of a cabin feel. I wanted them to look like they could have come from a cabin in the woods where they, too, had been a little worn…but loved!
The chairs were really easy to paint. I wanted a muted navy color, so I mixed equal parts of Maison Blanche furniture paint in Wrought Iron & Navy. I gave the chairs one coat of MB paint in Cobblestone to mute the wood tone first and then gave it one coat of the muted navy color. I initially was going to paint two coats of the muted navy, but when I got done with the first coat, I loved the look of it, so I stopped. Since I was going for an old, weathered look, I didn’t need a ton of paint. I sanded the chairs to distress them and then finished them off with a coat of dark wax.
I really love the way they look old and worn, but refreshed at the same time! I often distress my painted pieces (I almost never do a “modern/clean” finish), but these chairs got an even older look than I usually do. I just wanted them to look like they had a story. Like they’d been around a while, but they still had a lot to offer! Honestly, I love making furniture look old…but pretty at the same time. It really is my favorite look! PS – these chairs were for sale, but sold the day I brought them into The Found Cottage this weekend! I guess I need to get painting again, huh?! Oh, and I’ll be back later this week with the rest of my fall entryway, so be sure to stop back!
