Summer is in full swing, so what better time for a beachy dresser makeover?!
It’s ridiculously hot and all I can think of is heading to the beach…or the pool, or just finding a hose! Whatever! I just know I’m craving cool water and shade right about now! 😉
This makeover was definitely a challenge for me! I’ve been a perfectionist all my life and that has carried over into my furniture painting business. Although it’s great to be detail oriented, after a while it started to suck all the fun out of painting. I was so focused on doing a “perfect” job, that it wasn’t letting my creativity shine through.
Plus, it’s really hard to give a piece an “authentic” vintage look if you’re trying too hard!
So, I decided to throw out everything I knew about painting. All the countless words I had read on what brush to use and what technique is best for this or that. I didn’t adhere to any “rules” on this piece, I just let it do its own thing!
It was definitely scary at times, not knowing if the general vision I had would turn out, but I’m glad I stuck with it. I love the way the piece ended up. It is perfectly imperfect in my eyes. (And those wooden casters are to die for!!)
I can totally see this dresser in the guest room of a beach cottage!
I’m glad I was able to let go and just give this piece a chance to speak for itself. I need to work on letting things become what they’re meant to be instead of forcing them to be perfect. I think in the end, I’ll be happier with the results!
