It’s starting to get Christmasy around here! I still can’t believe my tree is up already! Unfortunately, we had to buy a new one this year. I was sad to see our old one go since my husband and I have had it since our first Christmas together. But it bit the dust and it was time for a new one.
We have a certain problem every year, though, regardless of the tree. You see, we have two cats who always seem to want to defile our tree skirt every single year. It’s like it’s a target and they’re attracted to it the minute we set it down. This year, we decided to outsmart them and we got rid of the tree skirt altogether. We built this fab box for our tree instead. And plus – if the cats decide to have issues with this one, it’s just a blanket in there and we can take it out and wash it!
Okay, here’s how we built this beast. First, we measured the diameter of the base of the tree at its widest point. We knew the inside of the box had to be at least that large. Then we grabbed some old 2x4s from our basement and got started. We took out a wall recently in the basement and kept the 2x4s just in case we needed them for something else. Good thing we’re hoarders, huh?! Anyway, we cut all the 2x4s to length and then cut them in half down the middle, so they weren’t so thick. Then we laid them out and spaced them with some leftover tile spacers. My husband also cut four supports for the corners out of leftover wood from our pile.
After everything looked how we wanted it, my husband nailed it all together. He started with two sides, nailing the boards to the supports on two sides.
Then he nailed the remaining sides to the supports.
It all took maybe an hour from design conception to completion. We talked about staining the boards, but liked the look of the raw, old boards just how they were!
So, now we had a box for the tree. My husband picked up the tree and I shoved the box underneath and it fit perfectly! I loved it. But it felt really bare inside. Since I have zero presents wrapped (I’ve only actually purchased one so far!), I had to fill the box with something else.
I first tossed a blanket in, but it just sank to the bottom. So I grabbed a couple extra pillows from downstairs and lined the box with them. Much better.
To top it off, I added the blanket back in. Now it looks cozy, has some height to hide some of the tree trunk, and can even act as a place for the cats to nap – and they (hopefully) can’t ruin it!
Here it is in action. And our tree!
I think I still have a little tweaking to do of the tree, but it’s getting there.
I have to say, I love the rustic touch this box adds and I really love the fact that the cats don’t mess with it. One less stress during the holidays!
