A few months ago, Marian (aka Miss Mustard Seed) shared her styling date with Ella from Start Close In. When I read her post, I felt that tugging. I felt like I needed to do this for myself, too. I haven’t felt stylish since before I had kids and I just needed a little help.
But Ella lives on the east coast, how would she be able to help me from all the way over there?
Well maybe I could look for someone local who could help me out?
But, really, when am I going to make the time for that when I can barely get myself to make hair appointments!
And then one day, out of the blue, Ella emailed me! She said she’d found my blog last fall and wanted to know if I’d like to set up a virtual styling appointment! I was thrilled to say the least! This could work with the help of technology!
(Please excuse the camera remote in my hand … and the lack of cute hairstyle or jewelry. I had to take pics of myself, during nap time, sans my only necklace that the baby recently broke!)
I was ecstatic about our appointment and yet super busy with Christmas blogging projects that it was hard for me to set a date.
But I finally did.
And it was so great! Ella was the sweetest ever! She’s so down to earth and friendly. It was like I was meeting a new friend. I felt totally comfortable with her and trusted her fashion expertise!
She taught me a lot about layering. And making sure my outfits were kid friendly since most of my day is spent hanging out with my two little babes.
She also encouraged me to get some Old Navy Rockstar Skinny Jeans. (These are the ones I bought.)
Before my appointment with Ella I was not wearing skinny jeans. I still haven’t lost all the baby weight from my second child and felt like I wasn’t “allowed” to wear skinny jeans because I wasn’t, well, skinny enough.
But then I found these jeans and they just are so dang comfortable. I realize I’m not the skinniest person ever and I still have weight I want to lose, but I do feel confident in these jeans. And that’s what matters!
Be warned, though, they have a tiny bit of spandex in them and loosen as you wear them, so buy them just a tad too tight.
Ella also taught me about layering which I was currently not doing. I mean, how do you really layer a t-shirt and random pajama/painting/lounging pants?!
See?! I needed Ella in my life!
So she taught me things like layering stripes with stripes. And layering color families together.
I never would have put this outfit together without Ella. But she made me see why it works!
(The infinity scarf is one of my absolute faves from this shop. I wear it all the time now that I know how to use it!)
Lest you think all I do is wear skinny jeans and boots, here is one of my more casual outfits. I love these jeans but as I’m (slowly) losing weight, they are starting not to fit. And I can see now from the pictures that the skinny jeans actually look better even though they are closer to my skin. Hmmm, what a thought! Clearly I’m still working on that one!
Ella even got me to wear lip stain! And I actually didn’t hate it! I don’t ever wear lipstick of any kind because it always seems to turn orange-y on me and it always comes right off anyway. But I had never tried lip stains before this and I must say I’m a changed woman … well, at least some of the time!
It just feels so fancy to me.
One of my favorite things Ella taught me was to set myself up for success. Meaning, set up outfits beforehand so when I’m busy in the morning with the kids, I don’t have to think about what I’m going to wear. I open my closet, decide what outfit I feel like wearing, and put it on.
And my closet is now arranged by color, making it even easier to find what I’m looking for.
Don’t mind that pink shirt standing out on its own! I start my rainbow over when I get to my sleep/workout/paint clothes!
Here are a couple more outfits we put together.
Yeah, so this is about as fancy as I get! 🙂
And this is my other favorite scarf. (I don’t remember where I got it, sorry.) I really love the style and colors of it. It goes with so many outfits!
Now, when I go shopping, I think of what Ella taught me and I’m way more selective in what I buy. I look at colors and how things fit me in a whole new light. I have to absolutely love something to buy it.
If you’re feeling that little tug that says you need to do this for yourself, too, I encourage you to contact Ella and set up an appointment! It is so worth it to take time for yourself. There is so much power in being confident in how you look!
(Disclosure : I wrote this post in exchange for a free consultation from Ella. But I’m pretty sure I would have contacted her – and paid for a session – if she hadn’t gotten a hold of me first!)
