Christmas Chalkboard Art : My (Fake) Mantel

I never know what to call the shelf in my dining room.  It really isn’t a mantel, but I decorate it like one, so I guess I’ll call it my fake mantel!  😉  This year I thought I’d add a little Christmas chalkboard art to my shelf, er mantel!

Let me tell you a little story about this spiffy little chalkboard.  It first started out looking like this.  Then I put it in the basement and since you already know I don’t put my toys away like a good girl, it, umm, may have gotten stepped on and the glass might have broken.

So, when I thought of the whole chalkboard idea, my first thought of using the glass as my chalkboard surface was out.  No worries, I’ll just use the cardboard backing that came with it.  Okay, so I painted it all up with two coats of chalkboard paint.  Good to go, right?

Then I took about five hours to figure out what design I wanted to put on my chalkboard.  I finally got it looking okay and went to insert it in the fancy gold frame.  …and it didn’t fit!

See, when you have multiple cardboard pieces lying around and don’t test them out first, things like this can happen!  Needless to say, I was officially done with DYI-ing that night!

My next attempt went much better, thankfully!  I found the correct piece of cardboard, tested it out, and then painted it with the chalkboard paint.  It did take a few takes to get the design just right (I still think it needs a little work, but I just couldn’t take anymore!), but it was relatively relaxing, so I was thankful for a stress free task!

With Thanksgiving officially over, have you started decorating for Christmas yet?  Or are you waiting a little longer?

Love the entire look. I have a fireplace but after seeing how cute your fake mantel looks, I’d be good without one. Love your stockings. Where did you purchase them from.

New to your blog. Loving what I see.

Thanks Cynthia! I got the stockings from Target. I think they were buy one get one 50% off at the time. :)

That sounds like a bit of work for the artwork but SO worth it! Darn pretty! LOVE the whole setup!!! I don’t have an official mantel either- your alternative is just beautiful! (:

It was way too much work! But now all the hard work is done and it will be easy to change the sayings with the holidays/seasons! So, I guess it was worth it! 😉

DIYs always look so easy on blogs, but (and maybe it’s just me!) I feel like most of them have a story like this one behind it! It was work the extra work, though, because it turned out so beautifully! Thanks so much for sharing, Allison!

I love how this turned out! I had to giggle at your five our chalk design comment, since I have found myself in the same place! Amazing how much time your can spend on the words for these cute projects, isn’t it? I guess that’s why my outside chalkboard still says “Be Thankful”. 😉
