Halloween Decor and Milk Paint Color of the Month

Remember that dresser I was having such a hard time with?  Well, after removing several layers of paint, doing lots of sanding, applying a coat of shellac, a few coats of paint and a coat of wax, it’s finally finished!  This dresser really tried my patience and I literally asked my husband a few times if I could throw it away!  But now that it’s done, I’m so happy with it!

I’ve personally never painted a piece of furniture black, so this was a big step out of the box for me.  Miss Mustard Seed is showcasing a milk paint color every month and she started this month with Typewriter.  At first I wasn’t really sure about the black, but the more I painted, the more I loved it.  It has a such a perfect, rich tone.

And what better color for October than black?!  It’s perfect for Halloween, right?  When I was thinking about how to style my photos, I really wanted to do a Halloween theme, but there was a problem.  I love Halloween, I always have.  But I don’t ever decorate for it.  I just am not into ghosts and goblins, witches and spiders in my own house.  I love looking at everyone else’s decorations, but I’ve just never gotten into it myself.

So I went for a simple gold and black theme.  I made the book page bunting, similar to my patriotic bunting, using my handy Silhouette Cameo and a vintage book I got this summer.  I had the frame set up and knew it needed a little something, too, so I started searching for spider shapes to cut out.  But after a few clicks, I just couldn’t handle it!  I hate spiders (and pretty much all bugs!) so I just couldn’t do it!  I realized right then and there that it was time to switch my search to bats!  I found this great bat shape, cut it out in three different sizes and was good to go!

I brought the dresser and “boo” bunting to my booth at Painted Farmgirl and Friends this past weekend.  I got to do a practice milk paint workshop for a few of my friends while I was there, too!  I was a little nervous at first, but once I got going, I had a great time!  I had a few moments during the class where I thought “I’m so glad I’m doing this, this is so fun!”  And that just solidified that this is what I should be doing with my life and I’m exactly where God wants me to be!  I can’t wait to set up my first real workshop which will hopefully happen next month!

Oh, and I have to share this one photo from our weekend!  We got to go pumpkin picking, too, and had so much fun!  I just love our little family!  So happy and proud to be Mommy to these amazing girls!  (Of course, neither of them have mastered the art of looking at the camera, but we’ll get there!)

Oooooh! Or should I say Boooooh?:) The dresser is lovely—all your hard work definitely paid off. I also love the hardware you “dressed” it up with. And the family photo is precious!

Boo to you too … but this dresser certainly is no trick, it is definitely a treat! What a beautiful dresser and I think the hardware is perfect. It looks so rich and I am sure anyone would be trilled to purchase it and have it in their home. Your family is beautiful Alli, thank you for sharing such a beautiful photo it is a joy!
    Blessings!

Allison, Love the dresser and the hardware. I think it was worth the frustration. It looks great. I agree with the whole witches, ghosts, spiders thing. I decorate with a fall theme that I put out the first of October and leave out until I put the Christmas tree up. I love the fall season. Also, love your family photo. You will treasure those pictures even if they aren’t looking at the camera. Thanks for all your inspiration.

Thanks Becky! I’ve kind of given up on smiles and decided I will look back on these pictures in the future and know (at least with my older daughter) that was just her personality and it will in turn make me smile! :)

That color is stunning! It really pops with those beautiful knobs. Another beautiful piece, Allison!! Love your Halloween vignette, especially those cute little bats. I’m the same way – I don’t do scary Halloween just cutesy stuff :) Happy Fall to your darling family!!

I have the same issue with Halloween! I love it but the only decorating I do for it is the spiderwebs on my hedges and the pumpkins we carve. I’ve really been wanting to do something more decorative but not tacky. I love your “boo” bunting piece! Looks easy enough and totally my style!

Thanks for sharing! I love the dresser too!

It’s beautiful. It’s so good to do a little DIY outside our comfort zones. I know the feeling because I did a milk paint black dresser as well for my older son’s room. Great styling and glad to hear you are about to embark on what you are being called to me.
