Winter Mantel

The snow is finally on the ground here in Michigan!  We don’t have a ton, probably about 6 inches, but I’m pretty sure we’ve already gotten more snow this season than we did all last winter.  I’m so happy we have snow!  It feels so much more like winter when the ground has a good covering of snow on it!

This is the first winter we’ve had our “mantel” up.  (I know it’s not really a mantel, but we don’t have a real one, so this will just have to do!!)  We don’t have a lot of places to decorate in our small house, so I love having this shelf to add a little personality to our home.

I’m trying to work on defining my personal style rather than just throwing random things together and hoping for a decent result.  This was the perfect project to get me started.  I really tried to focus on puling in different textures, shapes, and colors when I put this mantel together.  I played around with it for-ev-er, but I’m glad I took the time to work on it and really make it something that I can enjoy every time I walk through the room.

And the best part is that everything I used I already had lying around the house.

Here’s a little bonus shot of my new drop cloth table cloth I made over Christmas.  I love the pop of color it adds and it really was super easy to make!

I wanted a light, pastel color pallete for the mantel, but I added a few darker pieces to give it a little more interest.

I picked up the mirror this summer at a garage sale.  I had intended on painting it, but still hadn’t gotten around to it.  I’m actually glad I didn’t paint it yet.  I think the gold adds a touch of warmth to the overall look.

Now to decide whether I’m going to do a Valentine’s Day mantel or just wait it out and do a spring mantel.  Oh, decisions, decisions!  ;)

Thanks for stopping by today!  Hope you’re staying warm wherever you are!
