Plaid Desk

I have been enjoying painting more lately.  I am finally getting some energy back (this pregnancy is really making me exhausted), so I’m painting and getting things done every chance I get while I have this new found energy!  I finally got this desk painted and am so excited to be able to share the transformation with you!
This is how the desk looked when I bought it.  I got it from my friend’s mom’s consignment store.  It actually used to belong to my friend’s dad who passed away several months ago.  
When I first saw it and heard that it belonged to my friend’s father, I didn’t want to buy it.  I was nervous that I would “ruin” it and that I would somehow scar that memory for my friend.  Over thinking, I know.  Anyway, I passed on it the first time I saw it, but decided to buy it when I went into the store the next time.  I’m so glad I did!  I loved working on this desk and especially doing the plaid treatment to the top!  It was so fun!

Here is the desk painted with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Chateau Grey.  I wasn’t sure I’d like the color at first, but I totally love it.  It’s sort of an army green.
After painting the whole desk, I started on the plaid treatment.  (I got the idea for the plaid from this awesome coffee table!)  First I started with two wide stripes of ASCP Graphite with two smaller stripes of ASCP French Linen close to the Graphite.

Ones those stripes dried, I did three wide stripes going perpendicular to the first stripes.  I watered down some ASCP Old White and lightly painted the stripes.  I did a custom mixture of Graphite and Louis Blue (I think!) close to the wide white stripes and then went back the other way with a watered down version of that color.  When everything was dry, I sanded the whole top to give it a little more distressed look.

Here is the finished plaid.  I LOVE how it turned out!!

The drawers were painted with Old White and the whole piece was waxed with a mixture of dark and clear wax.  I finished it off with new oil rubbed bronze knobs.

I’m totally loving how this piece turned out!  I haven’t even shown my friend yet, so we’ll see how she responds when she sees this post!  I really hope she likes it!  I like it so much that I wanted to keep it for myself, but I really have no place to put it.  So…it’s for sale along with several other items I’ve recently completed.  The desk is posted in my “shop” section here on the blog and in my new Etsy shop.  Be sure to check it out and send me an email if you’re interested.

    I love this!! I follow you on FB and I saw this in my feed earlier but got distracted. I’m glad I came back to take a look! It looks so cool and you did a great job. I like how the thick white stripe kinda looks like a piece of burlap.
